Horseback Hunting in Alaska

Since 1924, Pioneer Outfitters has been Horseback Hunting in Alaska. Deep inside the remote Wrangell and Nutzotin Mountains, Master Guide Terry Overly and his Professional Guides lead and guide guests and clients in pursuit of the Big Game animals that bring them to Alaska.

Pioneer Outfitters offers spring, Fall and Winter Hunts to those who wish to hunt for Alaska’s Big Game and predators. During the spring and Fall Hunts, all of the hunting is done on horseback. On our Winter Hunts, we use snowmobiles to run trap lines and travel.

There are many different type hunts available to a hunter here in Chisana with Pioneer Outfitters. One of the most satisfying changes that have been made in recent years has been in offering longer, multispecies hunts. The longer time frames combined with a combination hunt, allow you to appreciate the uniqueness of Alaska and the majestic land that you will be hunting.

Our specialties in hunting are Dall Sheep, Grizzly Bear and Alaska-Yukon Moose. Black Bear, Timber Wolf and Wolverine may be added to any Big Game Hunt as the seasons allow. There is no extra charge for Wolves and wolverine added to any Big Game Hunt.

Pioneer Outfitters goes to great efforts for the wild lands, wildlife and to our client’s ultimate success in all we do. The stewardship of this area in our nation’s largest National Park and Preserve is an honor and an obligation.

The white man discovered Chisana during what became known as the Last Historic Gold Rush, in the early 1900’s. If there was ever a place to be home to the magnificent animals of Alaska, this is it. Snow and glacier capped mountains, icy river waters pouring from massive glaciers, forests of Spruce, Birch and Cottonwood trees and rolling endless tundra valleys and foothills.

Dall Sheep, magnificent white, have been a focus of Pioneer Outfitters for over 90 years. The Wrangell St. Elias National Park has the largest population of Dall Sheep found anywhere in the world. This animal is most often found and hunted on the mountaintops and in rocky outcroppings.

With one of the only areas in Alaska that a Grizzly Bear may be harvested every year (instead of every 2 or 4 years), the population of Grizzly Bears in this area is outstanding. Color phase bears from the shocking Toklat (very blond with chocolate face and feet) to black these Grizzlies are amazing to see. The Chisana Valley is surrounded by glacial ice. With the winds that blow constantly off these glaciers, the Grizzly Bear’s hide is always kept long and silky.

The Alaska-Yukon Moose is the largest of all the deer family and a critter to behold. Our area is known for the genetics that produce these giants, with heavy brow tines and thick, wide palms. We have a 50” or 4-Brow-tine minimum to harvest one of these amazing animals.

Any combination of the three main Big Game animals may be selected for a hunt of a lifetime. Dall Sheep and Grizzly may be hunted in August and Dall Sheep, Grizzly Bear and Alaska-Yukon Moose may be hunted in September.

Once again, (and yes, you would be surprised how many folks really miss this point!) Pioneer Outfitters conducts all spring and Fall Hunts on horseback. No horseback riding experience is required; we have tons of experience and enough to share to help you have a wonderful hunt.

No experience is required, but a certain level of fitness and strength is needed. At Pioneer Outfitters we tailor each Big Game Hunt to your individual needs, abilities and dreams. The best way to physically prepare for a horseback hunt is to ride.

Our range horses live here in Chisana with us, year round, wild and free for half the year. These animals that carry our comfortable camps, and us are part of our team. The range horses that live here in Chisana with us are not pets. They are proud, strong beasts with hearts that give and give, year after year. They are the ones that are the hero’s, the ones that carry you over the icy waters, across the sucking boggy tundra and up the passes to the next beautiful valley.

Alaska Big Game Hunting with Pioneer Outfitters simply cannot be beat, folks. Family Hunts are our personal favorites (and I am really happy to say that we are expecting THREE families this year for our Fall Hunts!) and making memories to last a lifetime is what we do.

Decades of experience in this enormous area gives our clients and guests the comfort of knowing their safety is our first priority and the overall success of each Adventure, dream and hunt is what we train for, year after year.

I dug through all the posts I have shared with you and found a few to share with you, in case you missed them. These are to help give you a clear look at who we are and how we work. I also included a few that focus on our range horses, as they are such a huge part of our Team.
