Keeping Up With the Boys: Meet the Team

The Alaska Guide Trainees in training with Pioneer Outfitters and Master Guide Terry Overly are a huge part of our team. They are the future of the Professional Guide industry.

Meet the Team
Wes, Costen, Master Guide Terry Overly and Kaleb

I put together a list of questions for each of them to answer and to give the world a little insight to the young men and women we have in training at this time. We all agreed that Master Guide Terry Overly should be included as well, since he hasn’t written a post in ages for me…  Then, it bit me in the butt. Writing the post wasn’t enough. Coming up with the questions, wasn’t enough. I had to answer the questions too. Sigh.

Meet the Team!

Keeping Up With the Boys is what I like to refer to the updates I share with you all concerning our Alaska Guide Trainees. Meet the Team was a sadly neglected page on this website (hopefully I have it fixed by the time this post is done!), introducing the Team at Pioneer Outfitters to you, as well as the entire website introduces the family and business.

As this idea took shape, for this post, I gathered and drafted questions for them all to answer. I didn’t want to simply share where they are at, as Alaska Guide Trainees, but as individuals, as real people.

So I had a bit of fun. I emailed each one a copy of the questions and as one stopped work to come in, answer the questions and email me back, it was not a group effort. I wanted easy answers from them. I asked them to be honest, but not to take the questions too-oo seriously.

For the answers:

Master Guide Terry Overly (BLACK!)

Alaska Guide Trainee Kaleb (Green)

Alaska Guide Trainee Makinzi (Purple)

68. WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN ANOTHER PERSON?

(Terry) Loyalty. Honesty and dependability are spinoffs of loyalty. Loyalty is very important.
(Kaleb) Honesty.
(Makinzi) I’m not really sure. (I’m losing her…)
(Wes) A sense of humor.
(Costen) Trust.
~ Honesty and excitement.

69. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LEARNED IN THE LAST WEEK?

(Terry) That there is a lot I don’t know and really need to learn.
(Kaleb) Looking for specific signs of animals to become a successful trapper.
(Makinzi) How to convert algebraic sentences.

(Costen) That my brother can draw cool picture of me and a horse on notebook paper.

70. IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPER-POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

(Terry) The power to create peace and global unity.
(Kaleb) Immortality  and the ability to read people’s minds without them knowing it.
(Makinzi) Either the ability to read minds, so that I could know how they think and see things, or the ability to fly just because it would be awesome and I would not to have to pay for a flight to Chisana.
(Wes) Fly.
(Costen) I would just like to be Iron Man.
~ Remember “the box” from school? When you put your finger tips together to form a little box that you can peak through, frame a target…and squish? Yeah. That’s the one. I want that.

71. IF YOU COULD SAY ONE THING TO THE ENTIRE WORLD, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

(Terry) Open your eyes, to be really vigilant, strong and cautious.
(Kaleb) Why settle for just being average when you be so much more?

~ You are NOT alone. We ARE in this together.

72. ARE YOU HAPPY IT”S ONLY #72 QUESTIONS AND NOT #100?

(Terry) Yes, however I do have a lot to say!
(Kaleb) Hell yeah!
(Makinzi) I guess, but why’d it have to get to 72 in the first place?
(Wes) You have no idea.
(Costen) Yes I am.
~ Well, yeah. I have 5 other people’s answers to put together in this post!
Meet the Team
Pokin’ the Boss!

After receiving all the emails back, I started putting this post together. As I copy and pasted, edited, add punctuation and capitol letters (boyzzzz.) and read through everyone’s different responses (including my own), I found myself amazed again, at how unique we all are.

I hope you enjoyed this (very long) post and I hope you feel as if you know us all a little better. There may soon be a day you and I shall meet for an Adventure and I look forward to riding out with you. Maybe you’ll share a few things about yourself with us. Here, in the comments would be almost as great.

Take Care & Safe Adventures!

  1. This was awesome, Amber – Nice to meet “Team Pioneer Outfitters!”

    Terry is a wise man…

Fabulous, interesting folks up there in Alaska – cheers to all of you! :)

    • (Snort!) you guys all stick together…sigh.

Thank you for meeting my Team, Mark! Ha! I had been neglecting that page on the website, it was time.

Did you happen to notice the comment above, left by Rebekah?

I’ll catch up with you sometime today!
      ~ Amber-Lee

      • There are proper ways to syndicate articles that Google won’t doc you for… Duplicate content on your own site, or ripped off content with no credit to the original author is what hurts you. Think Huffington Post; they have a tremendous amount of syndicated articles (duplicate content) and Google love’s them. You just have to do it properly.

  2. That was Fun! I can’t believe you got all those questions answered by ALL of them..and very interesting, both questions and answers. You have a very Special Crew to work with there!Going to be an interesting year..LOL..can ya’ll answer these again in ohhh..6 months??? Hmm..sounds like you figured out how to get Terry to talk!!! Did I see that correctly? He has more to say??
**Snort..I thought that was you in the first photo..did Kaleb borrow your “shades”? You know……
    As Always ~*~

    • It was fun! Not easy, but it was fun. The best part was as I was putting their answers together and color-coding them all, was seeing exactly where each person’s mind was and how they each interpreted the question.

No. That strange man has his own pair. But! His aren’t Oakley’s with Alaska Chick stenciled into the corner of the lens!
      xxoo

    • Dannie! Pretty cool, eh?
It took FOREVER to get it all together! LOL, but it turned out pretty interesting, I think. It was really long, but I don’t think the insight would have been the same, had I broken them up into separate posts. Thank you for stopping in.
      LOVE!

  3. Haha, that was fun!

Terry’s answer to #8 cracked me up. I was laughing so hard I cried.

Also, Amber, in response to question #69 re: reposting guest posts on your own blog. Search engines will actually drop the rankings of blogs that have duplicate content (IE: the same post in two different places). So, as tempting as it is, it’s not a good idea.

    • Rebekah!

I am so happy you enjoyed it! Oh, #8….THAT man!

Hey! About that #69…. I thought to please the search engines, I only had to write before the post of in a line at the end, that it WAS re-blogged and link to where it was originally posted. No? I do NOT want to do anything detrimental to all the hard work that has gone into reaching out to the world.

Thank you for being here, Rebekah, it means so much to me!

        • Thank you, Rebekah!
          I really appreciate the time.
May I ask what you think of this idea? = What if I made a link (like on my side bar = “Guest Posts” or some such) and made a page with the titles and excerpt of each, linking back to the original?
          Would that be acceptable?
Again, thank you for chiming in and taking the time to ask your friends.
          ~ Amber-Lee

    • (snort) I’ll tell him! LOL
You HAVE to have someone, in your life, Gini, that everyone else is either in total awe of or actually even a little nervous around!
He is the biggest softie on the planet! (oops, don’t tell anyone else that, ok?)

Oh! Here’s one for you. #1- Children, even itty bitty babies, LOVE him. and #2? So do doggies.
There. What more proof do you need?
      (Big grins)

    • Ryan,
It means a lot to me for you to share that. Thank you. I think the randomness of the questions really got the “first reaction” replies, which is what I had hoped for, to give people the chance to really know things about them. They are each, individually, very interesting and fine humans. Together? They make the BEST TEAM.
      Thank you.
      ~ Amber-Lee, aka Alaska Chick

      • It did. I’m not ‘old’ but old enough to put myself in their shoes as well as family they left behind. It was neat to see their personalities and relate to their answers as I may have at that age. I thought I was going to enjoy getting old – LOL. Things like this just remind me to ‘lighten up’ and remove a hardened layer from myself. Around and ’round I go.

  4. Seriously. You get the award for the longest blog post evah. You’re done. Go on vacation. I think you forget one, Do you have body odor? Kidding; I don’t really want to know.

Are all these trainees like 18yo? Wow.

    • LOL! Let’s see,

      Kaleb is 20.
Costen is ABOUT to be 20.
Wes is like 14 (No!! LOL, I am joking!! He is 22).
      Kinze IS 13 years old.
Boss Man swears he is 39.
And I am just plain OLD.

It was long! Sheesh and they all pitched a b*tch about having to type up their own answers! LOL
      (eyes crossing)
      Thanks, Jayme.
For being here and for “getting” it (and me!)
      ~Amber-Lee

        • Ha! Most people, even after spending ten days with Makinzi in the field, are surprised to hear it!

Makinzi is my son’s sister and has been sure of her life since she stood only knee high. There is no stopping her. Lucky for us all, lol, her Momma and Daddy totally understand and support the young people’s choices.

The Survival Guide Training run from 10 weeks to two years.
          ~ Amber-Lee

  5. Oh wow now that was fun. All you guys are characters in your own right (please take that as the compliment its meant to be) I think sitting at the campfire with all of you would be great fun. I see Makinzi is a Nascar fan as am I. I hope she can get the races up there in Chisana. Terry and Amber Lee, thanks for sharing yourselves as well as your team with us. Do I dare say very (admirable?) Ha,learned that one from Terry. Just goofin with ya Amber Lee, it was super. Be Safe and Happy Trails. Mike
