Monday Motivation, Dont Suck

That was as politely said as I could make it.

Seriously!

This week’s Monday Motivation is a reminder to take each and every task, job, interaction or what-have-you, very seriously.

Give it your all.

Dont SucK.

Trust me; if you think it was good enough, you suck.

Dont Suck

Dont SucK

Harsh?

No, not really.

I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of hearing “well, that’s good enough..”

When really, it isn’t, not often enough to count.

Good enough seems to be the accepted level of work these days, no matter where I look.

The job or task is done… sorta.

Or at the very least.

There is no extra effort put into it, certainly no love or creativity.

There certainly isn’t any more done, than absolutely required of the stated job or task.

Most often, it isn’t even done thoroughly enough that it doesn’t need more, immediately.

What gives?

There has been a lot said lately about people not liking their jobs, bored with their current positions or frustrated by bosses or managers not appreciating or valuing their Teams or co-workers.

All I can think when I read this is “Really?

Dont SucK

You finished the paper that was due in History, but did you add any pizazz to it at all?

A sentence or three about how it made you feel to dig deep might be nice, or a little research that didn’t come straight out of your history manual might offer that little something extra.

You finished your department evals and reports to turn into the VP, but did you bother to listen to what any of your Team was actually saying?

You finished the post you hope to publish next week as a guest post for XYZ.inc but did you read the guidelines and check the entire document one last time for grammar and spelling errors?

You did the dishes as you were asked, but did you wipe the counters?

“Much good work is lost for the lack of a little more.”  ~Edward H. Harriman

None of those real life examples are going to make a huge difference, right?

Wrong.

Those real life examples are exactly why you are and will continue to be unhappy, bored, frustrated, not appreciated and under valued.

FOREVER.

“Character is what emerges from all the little things you were too busy to do yesterday, but did anyway.”  ~Mignon McLaughlin

DonT SUCK

It is very simple”, as I tell my own kiddos as well as my Trainees, “You can be a hero or a pain in my ass. It’s your choice, of course. But you will do the job.

Why not be a hero? Life is better that way.

Rarely does anything take much longer, when it’s all said and done, to do an outstanding job- at anything, than it takes to do it in a half-assed or half-hearted or “good enough” manner.

And it does matter!

“Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts.  This is the secret of success.”  ~Swami Sivananda

People are watching you.

Always.

Observing you and taking their moves from you and how you do things.

People are watching and deciding if you are going to be an asset to the next level of the Team or simply an ass and not worth the trouble.

Dont Suck

This covers everything from high-school teenagers just wanting to get their homework done so they can play the x-box or dream about the next dance, to the Trainee who thinks you are simply wasting their time when you are sharing your own experiences and past mistakes with them, to the co-worker who sees that you missed something, but since it isn’t his job he isn’t going to do it- or remind you to!

“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”  ~Abraham Lincoln

This is the person who sees you struggling with an armload of bags to open the door, who stands behind you making impatient noises waiting their turn to walk out the door.

We all know the difference between right and wrong.

We have all heard the quaint phrase, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Then why is it so hard for us all to take that extra minute or two to lend a hand, check our own work one last time, look around to see if there is anything else that can be improved, put a little life into our work or even give a smile of encouragement to a stranger?

“If you feel you are down on your luck, check the level of your effort.”  ~Robert Brault

It matters.

You matter.

He matters and so does she.

We matter.

The job matters. The goal matters.

Every single day, every single one of us impact the lives of those around us.

And it matters!

So today, and all this week, take a little extra care no matter what happens around you, to be sure that you don’t suck.
