Suddenly Sunday, Empowering You

Our focus for 2014 is Be Fearless! Continuing the explanation that I started to share with you in the post Bold & Brave, today’s word is Empowering. Empowering you, is my wish and dream.

Empowering is defined as giving someone the authority or power to do something. Pretty vague, eh? Hopefully, I can help to shed a little light and understanding what Empowering and Empowerment mean to me and can possibly mean for Empowering you!

Empowering You

Empowering You

As we considered different words to describe our own determination and strengths as well as weaknesses and difficulties that lay ahead to overcome, “Be Fearless” seemed to ring the bell for everyone on our Team.

Empowering (E) is the second letter represented as we agreed how we would go about following our focus to Be Fearless. What does this mean to us, here in the mountains of Alaska?

We are Professional Guides. We are also trainers of Professional Guides for the state of Alaska. We are Leaders, each in our own right and direction as well as part of a Team. A Team celebrating it’s 90th Anniversary in 2014.

There are multiple interpretations of what Empowerment means and how it is linked to leadership as well as success. Some people believe that another person, generally someone of a higher position in your field, must empower you, or bestow upon you the power- to make decisions or choices autonomously.

Empowering You

Some people believe that Empowerment can only come by taking it for oneself.  When speaking of leadership, others believe that this is one of the most important responsibilities of a leader, to empower their Team or followers to accomplish the vision or goal.

I remain firm in my own convictions that it is actually a combination of all of these viewpoints that is closer to the actual fact of the matter regarding the word and meaning of Empowering.

Empowering, Empowerment, Empower

These are some heavy duty words that have always been inspiring and motivating to me, which ever way they were being used or coming from.

As a Professional Guide and Leader it is my consistent and ultimate goal to offer my own experience and knowledge for safety and direction, legalities and fulfillment of the dream that brings each individual to Alaska and Pioneer Outfitters.

As the Lead Trainer for the State of Alaska it is my ultimate obligation to empower the Trainees that apprentice with us to become what is required of a Professional Guide.

As a Leader, it is imperative that I use all of my skills as a Leader and Guide to recognize and utilize the strengths and skills of my Team and Trainees. To recognize that what we do as a Team would be impossible for most to accomplish alone.

Empowering, Empowerment, Empower

We are each individuals, from the Boss, Master Guide Terry Overly, myself as a Professional Guide down to my newest Alaska Guide Trainee from Flyspeck, Nebraska or some such place. We are all stronger when we lift together, all smarter when we think and plot together, faster when we work together and better when we all rely on each other. So, Empowering Leadership, the practice of sharing power with subordinates and allowing them to make decisions, is a given, with supervision at first, in our world.

As Professionals in an industry in that legalities change without warning, it is imperative that we all, from Trainees to Master Guides, are constantly and consistently open to any and all means of education and learning. It is critical for the survival of our entire industry that we are without fail knowledgeable in all areas of not only our profession, but of land management and wildlife conservation.

As Professional Guides of Alaska and working in some of the most dangerous conditions and within some of the most challenging terrains on the planet, we are also calculated risk takers as well as courageous explorers and pioneers by historic definition.

Empowering You

YOU already have the power. Whatever power you need. You may need more training; you may need time so that you have more experience. But whatever power you imagine that someday you will acquire, it is already there, inside of you.

Finally, we come to the place where I find and check my own answers always, the Bible. The Bible has the first and last answer to every problem or puzzlement I encounter, I have finally come to understand. As I searched inside of the Word for what it may say about Empowerment I found dozens of references. This is the one that resonated with me today:

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish. You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all. For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” ~ Isaiah 41:10-13 (ESV)

I hope this Suddenly Sunday, Empowering You gave you the inspiration, motivation and peace that writing it brought to me. I hope that if you liked it, you will share it with someone else who may take strength and empowerment from it.
