We all have situations as we lead from where we are, in whichever position we might be filling either as leaders of a business, company or group or as a teacher, instructor or parent, when it would be easier, on every level to simply do (or say) what would make everyone smile and fill their immediate worlds with unicorns and rainbows. But does it fulfill the Purpose? The Purpose. Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists or to have as one’s intention or objective. Preference is a greater liking for one alternative over another or others. The Purpose, as it reveals itself to me, is to ultimately and without fail to support the Mission Statement.
The Mission Statement is a formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual. The Purpose, the Mission Statement, doesn’t care if you are exhausted, beat up emotionally or wore out physically or mentally. It is. It answers the question, “enough?” without favoritism, with no grudges and without Preference. We had been discussing how hard it is at times, to simply do your best for not just the company, business or group; but for the world that the ripples of each decision touches. How hard, and even confusing, it can be to lead. To understand that this is exactly what is happening.
Do You Walk With Purpose or Preference?
The reasons that we work, learn and sacrifice, is the Purpose, the path. The path we each follow to reach the goal, the pinnacle and to be part of the change we wish to see. The Purpose never ends, it is never finished and it never ceases to reach out and touch people we haven’t even met and even some that we never will. The Purpose just is, just like the Mission Statement.
Preference, is our own idea, our own feelings and reactions originating from and to all things we touch and come in contact with. Preference is what you’d like to do … if this or that was another way, to make things easier, to smooth something out, to point out something or not, it is simply what you would like to do.
Herein lays the problem. It is all well and good, if what you would like to do is directly in line with what the Purpose of what you are doing is. If what you would like to do doesn’t support the Purpose, you may have to question your own position. You may find that you are no longer Walking your Walk (or Talk) at all. Instead of following the Path, you have worked so hard to groom, trim and clear, you may have taken a detour into dangerous and boggy ground, spurred by Preference.
Do you have a specific Purpose in you life, career or path? Do you have a Mission Statement, and if so, do you know what it is? (Verbatim) Is it something you know and believe in, work towards and sacrifice for? Are you able to and willing to share it, with others, every day?
Do you find strength in your Purpose, in your Mission Statement? How often do you find yourself wishing you could do or say something (or not)? Do you ever find yourself torn between the Purpose and your own Preference? Ask yourself, “Do you walk with purpose or preference?”
