Forever Young, a New Year’s Foundation and Strength

Welcome to 2015! It is a new year and indeed, a new blessing. A New Year’s foundation and strength come from those who travel into the fresh with all of the experience and wisdom of the old, I believe.

Foundation and Strength

Changes, even those worked for, tend to be difficult and incredibly challenging at times to see them through to when they bare the fruits of all the efforts, sacrifice and tears.

So many changes have taken hold in our lives here in the Interior of Alaska, with so many changes; both professionally as a member of a team and personally, both as a woman and as all else I have become, new insights and knowledge emerge painfully bright and clear.

Forever Young was playing this morning as I sat down to get back to work and to find that peace that comes from what is truly a labor of love and escaping the much too noisy details of each passing moment surrounded by the dark of winter.

Forever Young, a landmark song from my own past (it was my own class song!) as well as a wish, a blessing and both a characteristic and an inheritance of a professional guide’s life.

Memories of blessings offered by Nature herself, witnessed and experienced, the lessons granted by human foibles and struggles in the field and open wilderness; these are part of both the extra gift offered and the foundation that grows a professional guide over the aging time and of the evolution and changes that come to us all eventually.

Forever Young, written and recorded by Bob Dylan in late 1973. The song first appeared on Bob Dylan’s 1974 album Planet Waves. My own favorite version of the song is the cover version sung by Audra Mae in Episode 12 Season 1 of the television series Sons of Anarchy.

“Forever Young” By written and recorded by Bob Dylan

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

As we grow older and as life tends to be a full contact sport for many of us, most especially a professional guide, it seems our youth and energy is a distant memory at times. It is exactly and precisely at these times, and in times of change that we need to stand on the foundation and strength we are given through that time and trade for our youth. It is exactly and precisely at these times, we are forever young.

  1. Love this. I also loved that song although it wasn’t written until the year after I graduated. I used to blast it in my earbuds while out jogging. Yeah, probably to feel forever young. I can’t tell you how many times I have explained away circumstances by your very words. “Life is a contact sport and sometimes we get beat up pretty bad.”

    • Lol! I remember you saying that, hearing that the first time, thinking to myself- “EXACTLY!”
I am not sure I would want to BE that young again, but I sure wouldn’t mind feeling it a bit more often!
Jane, it is an absolute pleasure to know that you’ll be watching! (Although…. now I feel that I DOUBLY better watch my mouth! LOL)

  2. Awesome post..Awesome song..the best..Love this singer!

Oh by the way..’Contact Sport’ turns into a full time version more like a daily version of an Iron Man Triathlon and that’s just getting out of bed..Snort!
