Leadership, Guide Trainees and Beliefs

It’s an important question for all of us to ask and answer for our own growth. What do you really believe about Leadership?  We are each of us, leaders. As Professional Guides this is doubly true. So, have you ever stopped to think about what you really believe about leadership?

All I have learned through study, examples good and bad, by other Professional Guides, from my own time in the U.S. Navy as well from my own positions of leadership; has both broadened and narrowed my own beliefs of leadership.

I believe Leadership comes from within. Every aspect of an individual’s leadership comes from within that leader.

“The Voice

There is a voice inside of you

That whispers all day long,

“I feel this is right for me,

I know that this is wrong.”

No teacher, preacher, parent, friend

Or wise man can decide

What’s right for you–just listen to

The voice that speaks inside.”

~ Shel Silverstein

Commitment, confidence, sense of humor, honesty, ability to delegate, vision, ability to communicate, honesty, intuition, creativity, positive attitude and the ability to inspire; these are all qualities of a Professional Guide. They all come from within the individual. They are part of every good leader.

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.”
~ Denis Waitley

Understanding that this lays within us, what is required of each of us to grow and be more than we were yesterday is an enormous step for some people to acknowledge. Some people say Leaders are born, some say they are made.

“The leadership instinct you are born with is the backbone.  You develop the funny bone and the wishbone that go with it.”  ~Elaine Agather

The Leadership skills that each Professional Guide has in abundance are inside each one of us. It is only through reflection, work and the dedication to become the best possible version of ourselves using all we learn as we continue growing, that we will shine.

We’ve all found new awareness through listening to other people’s take on whatever subject that interests us. Have you ever thought about what you really believe about Leadership? If you are considering becoming a Professional Guide, have you considered what your own leadership strengths are?

More, even if you are not a Professional Guide or have any intention of pursuing such a hard and uncommon path, these questions are still very pertinent. Are you aware of your own leadership? How do you serve your own leadership?

Survival Fitness

Survival Fitness brings to mind something you would encounter and endure (most likely) in a military program.
